Biography

Hsu Wei-En has established himself as an opera conductor and an early music specialist in promoting Baroque opera and the art of recitative for pianists. At the same time, Hsu has worked closely with living composers in his generation.


A graduate of the Juilliard School, Hsu is an accomplished pianist, organist, conductor, répétiteur and composer. He is now an Associate Professor at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. A native of Taiwan, he received his BFA degree in Piano at Taipei National University of the Arts. He has received additional training at the Royal Academy of Music, University of Cincinnati, and Rutgers University.


As an author, his latest books are Keeping Music Alive during the Pandemic: Stories and Lessons from the World’s Leading Opera, Orchestra Librarians, and Music Archivists (published by Emerald Publishing) and Creating a Global Cultural City via Public Participation in the Arts: Conversations with Hong Kong’s Leading Arts and Cultural Administrators (published by Nova Science Publishers, Inc.). In 2018, he was named the 2018 NTCH Artist in Residence in Taiwan. For his contribution to the music profession and community, he was elected as an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM) in 2017, Fellow of the Guild of Musicians and Singers (FGMS), Associate Fellow of the National College of Music (AFNCollM), Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA), Fellow of the Fraternity of St Cecilia (FFSC), Fellow of the Western Orthodox University (FWOU), Fellow of the European-American University (FEAU), Officier Academicien of Mondial Art Academia, and the Circle Foundation for the Arts (CFA) Affiliate Artist in 2020.
