The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) appoints Dr. Terry Lam as Dean of Film and Television

The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (“the Academy”) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Terry Lam (林均乘博士) as Dean of the School of Film and Television with effect from January 27, 2025.

Dr. Terry Lam is a scholar-practitioner engaging in film narrative, screen production design, and digital media technology for over 25 years. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Film and Television from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts; a Master’s Degree in Design Strategies from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University; and a PhD from The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.

Since 2001, Dr. Lam has been involved in numerous prominent Hong Kong and international film productions and undertaken supervisory roles in a wide spectrum of local action movies for VFX productions, including Legend of Zu (蜀山傳), Infernal Affairs (無間道), Fearless (霍元甲), Twins Effect (千機變) and The Stool Pigeon (線人), etc. In recent years, Dr. Lam shifted the focus of his work towards scriptwriting, and he has received numerous accolades from the film industry. One of his renowned screenwriting works, A Guilty Conscience (毒舌大狀), has been awarded with “Best Film” in the 42nd Hong Kong Film Awards.

A seasoned academic administrator, Dr. Lam has extensive experience in teaching, innovation, practice-based research and curriculum design. Prior to joining the Academy, Dr. Lam worked in the School of Design of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and led industry research projects. Alongside his research path from creative practice to immersive technology, Dr. Lam has focused on the interdisciplinary practice between game technology and media development for industrial innovation. As evidenced by three successfully funded projects from the Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Fund, Dr. Lam has continued his research on virtual production, action-cinema technology and film pre-visualization.

Dr. Lam has been invited to take up leadership roles and served on the board of examinations of creative media programmes in several higher education institutes. He is the former Vice-Chairman of the Hong Kong Designers Association and External Examiner of Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI), The Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi) and the Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC).

 

Dr. Gordon Munro, Acting Director of the Academy, commented, “Dr. Lam has thorough knowledge of the film, television and entertainment industry and is a dedicated advocate of the performing arts. Previously, Dr. Lam was the Acting Dean of Film and Television of the Academy. With his expertise and strong industry connections, I believe that he will make a positive and valuable contribution to the Academy. I look forward to working even more closely with him.”

The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA), established by The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts Ordinance in 1984, is a leading tertiary institution in the performing arts in Asia. It provides professional undergraduate education and practice-based postgraduate studies. The study encompasses Chinese Opera, Dance, Drama, Film and Television, Music, and Theatre and Entertainment Arts. Its educational philosophy reflects the cultural diversity of Hong Kong with emphasis on Chinese and Western traditions, and interdisciplinary learning.  

Since 2008, the Academy has attained the Programme Area Accreditation (PAA) status awarded by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ) to self-monitor and accredit its own undergraduate and post-secondary programmes in the five programme areas of Dance, Drama, Film and Television, Music, and Theatre and Entertainment Arts. Since 2016, the PAA status has been extended to cover Master’s Degree programmes and below; and since 2023, the programmes operated by the School of Chinese Opera accredited by HKCAAVQ has also received PAA status for its post-secondary and undergraduate programmes.  

Besides the main campus in Wanchai, Béthanie, the site of the Academy’s Landmark Heritage Campus in Pokfulam, has housed training facilities for the School of Film and Television since 2006.  

In the QS University Rankings announced in 2024, the Academy ranks 1st in Asia in the Performing Arts category.
