Dr Eddy Fong received his education in Hong Kong and in the United Kingdom. He graduated from the University of Kent in 1969 with a Bachelor Degree in Social Science and subsequently qualified as a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales in 1973.
Upon returning to Hong Kong, Dr Fong continued to pursue a career in public accounting. He was a senior partner with the international accounting firm Pricewaterhouse Coopers until his retirement in 2003.
Dr Fong’s association with the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (Academy) dates back to 1989 when the Society for Academy for Performing Arts (SAPA) was set up for the purposes of enhancing public awareness of the Academy in the Hong Kong community and raising funds for scholarships, benefiting both local and non-local students. He has continued to serve as an Executive Committee Member and Treasurer of SAPA until the present day. During this time, through the generosity of philanthropists and corporate donors in Hong Kong, SAPA has raised over HK$93 million for scholarships.
Dr Fong also served as a Council member of the HKAPA during the period from 1993 to 1998 under the chairmanships of Dr Helmut Sohmen and Mr Yao Kang, in the role of Treasurer, overseeing the Academy’s finances.
Dr Fong has a long and distinguished record of public service. He is currently Non-Executive Chairman of the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) in Hong Kong, Council Chairman of the Open University of Hong Kong, a Director of the Hong Kong Mortgage Corporation Limited and Member of the Banking Advisory Committee. He has also previously served on the board of the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority, as Member of Hong Kong Housing Authority and Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications.
In 1997, Dr Fong was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Social Science by his alma mater University of Kent where he is currently an Honorary Professor and Member of the Advisory Committee of the Kent Business School.
Dr Fong was appointed as a Justice of Peace in 1996 and was awarded the Gold Bauhinia Star in 2007 by the Hong Kong SAR Government for his contribution to public service.
